Instructions
Purchase a good quality dog crate. The crate will need to be large enough for your puppy to turn around and lie down without being crowded. It should also be small enough to not allow the puppy too much freedom. A puppy will not want to dirty his sleeping area. Keep in mind that the puppy will grow. Some crates come with dividers that allow you to start the pup out in a smaller area, and then expand by removing the divider. Crates work well as a sleeping area and a safe place to stay for several hours while you are away.
Investigate dog food brands. Select one that has quality ingredients and is specifically meant for growing puppies. Foods with too many grains will cause your pup to go to the bathroom more frequently.
Establish a routine for your puppy's meals and adhere to it. Puppies will need to be fed 2 or 3 times a day. Regular feeding times will help to regulate his bathroom times.
Take your puppy for his potty break within 15 minutes of the time he has finished eating. Train him to go to the same spot every time he goes out.
Direct the puppy to "go potty" as you place him on the ground. Allow plenty of time for him to sniff around and become comfortable with his bathroom area. Stay with him until he "goes potty".
Bestow lots of praise on the puppy when he obeys the command. Give him a tiny treat as a reward each time he is successful.
Confine your puppy to a limited area within your home so you will be able to watch him better. If he is allowed to wander freely, there is a better chance he will go to the bathroom unnoticed.
Be aware of any sign the pup gives that he has to go to the potty. Puppies will usually whimper, sniff or turn in circles when they need to go out for a break. Upon noticing any of these signs, take him immediately to his outside spot.
Wipe up and disinfect any area where your puppy has an accident. Using a disinfectant that is enzyme based will help to eliminate any remaining odors. Puppies have a natural urge to go back to the same area if the smell remains.
Restrict your puppy from consuming water late in the evening. His bladder is small and allowing water before bedtime will contribute to overnight accidents.
Refrain from making a fuss when your puppy has an accident. They are inevitable as he is growing and learning. Sometimes giving attention to the accident, even negative attention, can contribute to failure.
