How to Train Puppies to Pee Outside

One of the first things you should consider when you get a new puppy is how to train it to pee outside. Unless the puppy is house trained, it will continue to go pee and poop in the house, which could ultimately ruin furniture, clothing and even electronics that may be on the floor. When done correctly, you can house train a puppy in as little as a couple weeks. This process requires constant attention and patience, but the outcome is well worth it.

Keep your puppy confined to one room while you potty train it. This enables you to keep an eye on the puppy at all times, and it prevents the puppy from making a mess in a spot you may not notice. Keep a sheet of newspaper directly beside a door that leads outside.

    • 2

Watch the behavior of the puppy. Actions such as sniffing the ground, whimpering, walking in circles or running to a hiding spot indicate that the puppy has to pee. As soon as you see these actions, grab the puppy quickly but calmly and put it on the newspaper. When it pees, praise the dog in an excited voice and give it a small treat. Even if it pees on the floor while you carry it, you should still put it on the paper and reward the pup.

Continue this process for a week. The puppy will quickly learn that the spot by the door is where it is supposed to pee, so it will automatically go there when it gets the urge.

    • 4

Begin to carry the puppy outside each time it walks to the newspaper. Stand with it outside and encourage the dog to pee. Make sure you always use the same word when you tell it to go. For example, you could say, "Go potty!" The puppy will quickly learn the meaning of the word and eventually learn to do it on command.

Put the dog on a set schedule for going pee outside. For example, take it out when you wake up, when you get home from work, after dinner and before bed. Each time you take it out, tell the dog to go pee or potty and reward it each time.
