How to Lead Train a Puppy

Puppies are rambunctious, energetic and want nothing more than to get out into the world and explore all the new sights, sounds and animals. The best way to exhaust some of this energy and allow the puppy to poke its nose around a bit is to take it on a nice long walk. Utilizing a lead--a collar that fits around the dog's muzzle and chest--instead of a leash is a way to allow the puppy to look around but still let it know that you are in control and should be followed. Even before going outside, its important to help the puppy get familiar with the lead.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a collar onto the puppy. There should be enough room to fit two fingers between the collar and the puppy's chest, no more. The collar should be checked for comfort every few days and adjusted accordingly.

    • 2

Allow the puppy to wander around the home and lawn with the collar on alone. This will help the puppy become accustomed to the collar before any lead or leash is added.

    • 3

Remove the collar and replace it with a lightweight lead. Allow the puppy to wear this lead for a few hours, then place the collar back on. Repeat this process for two to three more days as the puppy becomes used to both the lead and the collar.

    • 4

Train the dog to walk on the lead around your home and lawn. Remove the collar and place the lead on the dog. Take a step forward, hold out a treat in front of the puppy's face and state the command, "come." Give the puppy the treat if he walk up next to you and does not attempt to pull further ahead. Keep walking and giving the puppy a treat about every 15 seconds. Repeat this process for a few minutes a day, four times a day for a week.

    • 5

Take your puppy out onto the sidewalk or road and walk with him at a slow pace.

    • 6

Allow the puppy to roam, but if he begins to pull ahead and yank on the lead, stand still until the puppy stops pulling.

    • 7

Give the puppy a treat and praise once he beings to walk at a comfortable pace and does not pull. Repeat steps 6 and 7 during the walk and on future walks, until a steady pace is achieved.
