How to Stop a Puppy From Chewing on It's Leash?

Puppies like to chew on their leashes for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is due to teething, playfulness or boredom. In other cases it is motivated by the desire to gain attention or to test boundaries. Chewing on a leash is not only an annoying habit but it can also be dangerous for the puppy. She could chew through the leash and be free to roam. There are a few simple procedures that you can use to break your puppy's bad habit.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace her leash with a metal leash. The sensation of chewing on metal will usually discourage your dog from chewing on her leash. Once the bad habit has been broken you can switch back to a leather or nylon leash.

    • 2

Apply a bitter hot sauce to the leash. This will make chewing on the leash a very unpleasant experience for her. Bring along a bottle of water on your walk to offer your puppy some relief.

    • 3

Give your puppy a chew toy as a substitute. If the chewing is motivated by teething, boredom, or simple playfulness, this is a good substitute. Use verbal commands to reward her for chewing on the toy and to discourage her from chewing on the leash.

Train her with a short leash. This prevents the leash from dangling in her face and tempting her. It also makes it very difficult for her to reach it. Give her time to break the habit and then replace the short leash with a longer leash.

Punish her with a time out. This is an effective approach if the behavior is motivated by excitement and playfulness. Hold your puppy by the back of the collar and give her time to calm down. Also use verbal reprimands to let her know she is in trouble.
