Instructions

    • 1

Buy a ball. Choose a ball that is made of a hard material, such as rubber. Be careful that the ball is not too small that your dog can swallow it, or too large that it doesn't fit comfortably in his mouth.

    • 2

Make your dog comfortable with the ball. Toss it into the air around him, put it into his mouth and take it away. The object is to make your dog want the ball.

    • 3

Toss the ball a short distance from the dog. Tell him to 'fetch". Speak excitedly. If your dog goes near the ball, give him verbal praise, such as, "good boy" and a treat. Continue to do this until he is regularly going to the ball.

    • 4

Tell your dog to "come", in an excited tone of voice. When he obeys, exclaim "good boy" and reward with a treat.

    • 5

Try a leash if he is not obeying your commands. A retractable leash works best. Clip the leash on your dog, allowing approximately 10 feet to remain loose. Command "fetch" as you throw the ball to about the distance the leash will reach. Allow him to chase the ball. After he has it in his mouth, say "come", slowly retracting the leash at the same time. Reward with a treat and "good boy" when he reaches your side.

    • 6

Teach your dog to drop the ball. Remove the ball from his mouth as you say "drop". Follow with a treat and praise.

    • 7

Continue with "fetch", "come" and "drop" until your dog is doing it effortlessly.

    • 8

Increase the distance the leash will reach and practice his commands. Do this gradually, rewarding and praising with each step.

    • 9

Remove the leash and throw the ball. Command "fetch" as he chases the ball. Shout "come" after he picks up the ball. When he reaches your side, say "drop". If he obeys all commands, reward and praise. If he doesn't, repeat each step, rewarding and praising as he gets it right. If he still needs help, revert to using the leash again, until he has mastered the commands.
