How to Stop a Dog from Barking with a Device

Excessive barking is annoying, bothersome and, in some states, against the law. If your dog barks nonstop, consider using a device to help break the habit. The gentlest and most effective way in which to do so is with the help of a citronella collar. While some prefer to use shock collars, not only are they painful but they don't work as well to control dog barking. In fact, citronella collars are twice as effective than shock collars when it comes to deterring barking, according to PlacervilleVet.com. Citronella collars are easy to use and safe for your dog.

Place the citronella collar on your dog, with the small box that holds the citronella spray on its throat. If the dog barks all of the time, keep the collar on constantly; but if the dog only barks at certain times, only use the collar during those specific instances.

When the dog barks, the collar will emit a spray of citronella in the dog's face. The spray does not hurt the dog; it is only bothersome. Additionally, dogs typically do not like the smell of the citronella or the sound the collar makes when releasing the spray.

Keep the collar on your dog for a period of time and it will eventually learn that when it barks, it gets sprayed with the citronella. This will typically deter it from barking and you may be able to ultimately remove the collar. If the dog goes back to barking once the collar is removed, begin training with the collar on again.
