How to Train Obnoxious Dogs

Obnoxious dogs are annoying--there's no doubt about it. Many are hyperactive and they bite, bark and aggravate other pets at the wrong times, coming close to driving their owners insane. Inappropriate behavior will not go away on its own and it's up to you to take care of things. Arming yourself with the proper knowledge and committing to a routine are the first steps to training an obnoxious dog to become "man's best friend."

Instructions

    • 1

Establish who is the boss in your home. Your dog not only needs to love you, it needs to respect you. Letting it know who is boss will lead to easier training sessions.

    • 2

Begin with obedience training immediately and have everyone in the household participate. Obedience training establishes order and lets your dog know you are the boss. Start with commands you want your dog to learn such as "Stay," "Enough" or "Stop." Connect these commands with the proper behavior in the house, the car and the backyard and use the same command each time you correct your dog.

    • 3

Be firm with you dog. Tell it; don't ask it to do something. Using a firm voice that gets the dog's attention, is recommended by Pam Young, personal dog trainer, on the Dog Training Basics website.

    • 4

Correct your dog when it's committing the crime. When your dog begins to bite your hand, bark incessantly or annoy the cat, tell it "No" or "Stop" immediately. The only way your dog will learn to stop is if you catch it in the act and correct it.

    • 5

Reward your dog when he obeys. Positive reinforcement is one of the easiest ways to teach your dog good behavior.

    • 6

Play with your dog. Many dog breeds are hyperactive by nature. They like to stay busy and a way to keep them busy is to play with them whenever you can.
