How to Introduce an Aggressive Dog to a Cat

Aggression is a natural instinct in many types of dogs, but it's not pretty in the home. Some dogs and cats will get along just fine but if you know your dog doesn't get along with other animals, you don't have to give up the notion of having a dog and a cat. Introducing your dog to a cat is possible, but it must be done in such a way that your dog learns the desired behavior and leaves you in control of the situation at all times.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your dog in an animal crate. Introduce your dog to the cat in a single room. The idea is to limit the exposure the dog has with the cat. During this introductory phase, follow this same protocol.

    • 2

Monitor the dog while it is in the crate. Let your dog know you expect it to be quiet and calm. Scold your dog when it barks or growls at the cat. If it refuses to stop barking or growling, cover the crate with a sheet or make it wear a no-bark collar.

    • 3

Continue this training until your dog understands what is expected. Consider moving your dog from the crate to a leash when it has obeyed you and not barked at the cat for at least one week.

    • 4

Release your dog from the crate only when you are able to control it while its distracted. To test this, put the cat in the dog crate while the dog is waiting in another part of the house. Bring the dog on a leash into the introductory room. Drop the leash and watch your dog. If it begins to get out of control, grab the leash and remove the dog from the room.

    • 5

Repeat this process until your dog has learned the proper behavior. Keep in mind, this introduction period can last for weeks or months.
