Simple Training Philosophy
Establish eye contact and make the experience pleasant for your puppy. Talk to him in a sweet voice. Do not break away eye contact first.
Give commands once and enforce that command immediately. Do not repeat commands; your dog will learn she can get away with waiting until you force her to perform the command. Praise and reward your puppy when she has done what you have asked. A pleasant voice, a favorite toy and treats are some of the rewards you may use. Find out what treats your dog likes best and use them for special or more elaborate training.
Reward only positive behavior. If a dog growls at a stranger and you pat him and tell him it is alright, you have just rewarded him for negative behavior. Not all growling should be punished; the dog is communicating and warning that he is uncomfortable with the situation. Removing the dog from the situation will place the dog in a more comfortable environment and also teach him he will be removed from your companionship if he growls.
Socialize your puppy. Neighbor's dogs, dog parks and dog training classes are just a few places you can take your dog to interact with other dogs. Touch and pat your puppy everywhere to make him comfortable with being groomed and cared for when he has to go to the veterinarian. Correct any nipping with a firm "No" command while you stare at him and clamp his mouth shut.
Feed your puppy from your hand. Make her work for his breakfast and dinner. This will establish the bond you need with your dog. If the puppy chomps on your hand as she is grabbing the food, close your hand so she cannot get to the food. Open a small window in your hand out of which the puppy can gently lick and nibble the food.
