How to Train a Drahthaar Puppy to Point

Deutsch Drahthaars, or simply Drahthaars, are genetically the same as German Wirehaired Pointers. They are, essentially, German Wirehaired Pointers that come from lineages specifically bred to be excellent hunters. They are an ideal dog for bird and fowl hunting, for small game hunting, and also as a family pet. Like most pointers, Drahthaars are natural gun dogs, happy-go-lucky and eager to please. However, it may take a bit of training before your new Drahthaar puppy is ready with the patience to hold a perfect point by your side while you capture your prize.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand that just because your puppy isn't looking at you, doesn't mean that he isn't listening. Drahthaars, like all pointers, instinctively keep their eyes on their prey.

    • 2

Allow your puppy to maintain as much control as possible in the field. Drahthaars have been bred for generations specifically to point and hunt. You only need to tap into those instincts and allow the dog some independence.

    • 3

Make training enjoyable for both of you. Do not yell or strike your Drahthaar puppy. Do not punish bad behavior, but do reward correct behavior with small treats and praise.

    • 4

Recognize that pointing is an instinctual movement for Drahthaars. However, the point of an untrained dog is often followed quickly by a reckless run after the prey. This is what you both must learn to control.

    • 5

Fasten a check-leash to your puppy's collar. Wear gloves when holding the puppy if he is larger or particularly strong.

    • 6

Use a remote launcher to launch pigeons downwind from your dog. Keep the check-leash slack while he points. Watch carefully for any signs that he is going to dart. Thrush the pigeon by firing your rifle a few moments after your puppy darts. This will teach him that chasing the prey causes him to go unrewarded.

    • 7

Shorten the distance that your puppy is allowed to chase the pigeon before the thrush each time. Gradually tighten the leash in your hand to prevent your Drahthaar from darting altogether. Reward your dog if he holds the point.

    • 8

Continue training daily. It may take weeks or even months before your Drahthaar will hold a point as long as you wish, but it will eventually happen.
