How to Potty Train a Puppy to Go in the Snow

Potty training a puppy can be a daunting task for anyone, but when you add a few inches of snow to the task, it can be even more of a problem. Dogs, especially puppies, have a difficult time with the snow--especially deep snow--when they are not used to it. Many might simply stand there and bark at it. However, following these simple tips can make this process go much easier when it is time to potty train your pup to go in the snow.

Use a broom or a shovel and break down the snow in the general area where you want the puppy to eliminate. If the puppy is bigger, then they might not require as much snow removal. However, smaller pups have to be able to at least stand in the snow without being covered.

Go outside with your puppy and stay with him until he finishes his business. Try to make the experience fun and praise him when he finally goes.

    • 3

Take your puppy outside immediately in the morning and last thing before you go to bed at night--even in the snow--so he knows that he is supposed to go to the bathroom outside. Always take him out right after he eats as well.

    • 4

Take your puppy outside and play with him so he gets used to the snow. Make it a fun experience and do not keep him outside too long. This will eliminate any anxieties he may have about the snow.

Learn to read your puppy's body language so you know when he has to go to the bathroom. When he starts to sniff the floor, stand by the door, or starts barking at the door, simply grab your coat and take him right outside. This is true in all cases, whether there is snow on the ground outside or not.
