How to Train a Sheltie Puppy to Sit Down and Stay

A sheltie, or a Shetland sheepdog, is a long-coated breed that generally weighs between 20 to 25 pounds and grows anywhere from 13 to 16 inches tall. Shelties were originally bred as herding dogs, despite their small stature. They are known for their intelligence and willingness to learn and please their masters. These traits make it very simple to train a sheltie some basic commands, such as "sit" and "stay."

Instructions

  1. "Sit"

    • 1

Place your puppy in front of you and, with your hands, place him in a standing position.

    • 2

Hold a small treat directly above the puppy's nose and gradually move your hand toward the back of the dog's head.

    • 3

Speak the command, "Sit," one time as you make this motion. The puppy's body will naturally enter the sit position to follow the treat when you perform this motion.

    • 4

Allow your puppy to eat the treat after he successfully sits when prompted.

    • 5

Repeat this process several times and, after a few sessions, begin to replace the treat with verbal praise.

    "Stay"

    • 6

Place your puppy directly in front of you.

    • 7

Utter the command, "Stay," and extend your arm in front of you, placing your hand in a traditional "stop" position.

    • 8

Take one step away from your dog and, if he stays, offer him a treat. If the dog does not stay, walk back toward him and utter the command once again and walk one step away until he does finally catch on.

    • 9

Repeat this process several times. Each time, walk further and further away from your sheltie. Give him a treat each time he successfully "stays" when commanded to do so.
