How to Fix a Choke Collar

Choke chains (also known as slip collars) are a staple in dog training. When used properly, choke collars give owners a way to correct their dog's behavior. However, proper application is crucial or it won't be an effective training tool. Putting the chain on backwards, buying the wrong size and improperly attaching the leash are all common problems. Choke chain issues are easy to fix.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a high point on your dog's neck with the soft measuring tape. Add 3 inches, and make sure your choke chain is at least 3 inches longer. If not, buy a new one.

    • 2

Insert the choke chain through one of the large metal loops at the end. Then pull enough chain through until it resembles the letter "P."

    • 3

Twist the "P" until you are holding it horizontally. Then place the open part over your dog's head. The straight line of the "P" should dangle down over the right side of your dog's neck. If it dangles under your dog's neck, you haven't made a "P" and the choke chain is on backwards.

Clip your leash to the end of the loop that is dangling toward the ground. Take your dog for a test walk.
