How to Train Dogs Not to Bark Through Fences

Getting a dog to stop barking through a fence can be hard to accomplish, as there isn't necessarily one method that works with all dogs. Depending on your dog, you're going to have to engage in activities that will discourage your pet from barking and keep it away from the fence. However, keep in mind that every dog is different and that a lot of it will be trial and error.

Command your dog loudly and say "No" each time it barks through the fence. The moment your dog stops, praise and reward it with a treat. If it continues to bark, repeat the "No" command. Repeat this until it learns to obey the command.

Move the dog so it does not have access to the fence. If that isn't possible, you might try putting up a barrier, such as hanging a large piece of netting to block the dog from reaching the fence.

    • 3

Hang a radio on the fence out of the dog's reach so that it masks the sounds of cars, pedestrians and other things that might cause it to bark. Make sure the volume is loud enough to drown out outside sounds, but won't disturb the neighbors.

Block your dog's view through the fence. If there are gaps or slits in the fence, block the view with a blanket or some pieces of wood. The view of the outside world might be causing your dog to bark. Alternatively, if your fence is solid, the absence of a view might be causing your dog to bark. If that is the case, then you would want to try and give your dog a view.

Bring your dog inside if it continues to bark through the fence.

Consider purchasing a dog deterrent. There are products on the market that release an ultrasonic frequency that turns on if a dog barks. The sounds, unnoticeable to humans, startles the dog and stops it from barking.
