How to Train Your Dog to Stay Out of Certain Places

As dog lovers and owners, we love to share our lives with our canine companions. However, there are times when it is necessary or desirable to keep your pet out of certain areas. For example, you might want to train your dog to stay out of the dining room when you are eating. Or, to keep him safe, you will need to train him to stay out of the street. The following steps outline one method of training your dog to stay out of a specific room or area in your home. You can easily modify this process to train him to stay out of the street, garden or any other area.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the boundaries for the restricted area. For example, the doorway into a room is a good boundary and easy to teach to your dog. Place a broomstick or other boundary marker at the entrance to the room.

    • 2

Call or walk your dog over to the boundary. Sit him in front of the marker.

    • 3

Get the dog's attention, then tap on the marker, and say "Out."

    • 4

Take a step forward over the boundary marker. When your dog breaks and follows you, tell him "Out" and point back to where you want him to go. When he returns to the other side of the boundary, praise him.

    • 5

Repeat the process of reprimanding your dog when he crosses the boundary. Eventually you'll be able to remove the boundary marker without having him enter the restricted area.
