Neapolitan Mastiff Training

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a breed of dog originating in Italy and is one of several types of Mastiffs, all with similar personalities. A male Mastiff can weigh up to 165 pounds. This breed is known for its gentle demeanor and protective nature. Proper training is necessary from an early age due to the dog's size and power.
  1. Dominance

    • The Neapolitan Mastiff requires an owner who will act as the dominant partner of the owner/dog relationship so that this large breed is kept in control.

    Repetition

    • Neapolitan Mastiffs can be stubborn, so consistent training and repetition will help the dog become familiar with commands and obey them.

    Rewards and Punishment

    • Use kind words and gentle petting to let the dog know he has performed well. You may also use a small treat. For punishment, use the word "no" and start the command again.

    Socialization

    • It is important to teach your Mastiff to social at a young age, with both other dogs and people so that they remain relaxed in future social situations.

    Tips

    • Do not give up when the dog does not follow the command. Keep trying until he succeeds. Make some of the training fun and challenging to keep the dog interested.
