How to Do Weave Pole Agility Training

Before thinking of agility training, it is wise to have an established relationship with your dog. Sitting, lying, and standing on command are very useful when moving onto the more intricate maneuvers such as an agility course.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a "road" of two staggered rows of poles, spaced about 25 inches apart and with the "road" being just wide enough that each pole will stroke the side of the dog's body as he goes through the course.

    • 2

Take him repeatedly up and down between the poles until he begins to understand what is expected of him. While in the leash phase it is essential that he is rewarded with a treat on a regular basis to give him some motivation to comply.

    • 3

Bring the staggered rows of poles closer together in a series of imperceptible (to your dog at least) steps. Now he will have to twist slightly as he negotiates past the poles in front of him. Gradually, as the training progresses, the poles will be such that your dog will be running a proper slalom course.
