Dog Chewing

Chewing can be one of the most destructive canine behaviors in the home. No one wants to return home to discover their books, furniture, shoes and other belongings have been destroyed after their dog has misbehaved.
  1. Theories/Speculation

    • Puppies and dogs chew for a number of reasons, including teething (in puppies), boredom, fear and to get a reaction from their human companions.

    Redirection

    • Give dogs allowable items to chew on to redirect their impulses. Provide toys and chew treats that do not resemble household items, thereby alleviating any confusion.

    Dog Proofing

    • Remove dangerous objects from the dog's reach to prevent illness and injury. Dangerous objects include chemicals, electrical cords and any other items that might cause the dog to choke.

    Considerations

    • Provide dogs with activities to prevent boredom-related chewing. Try walking or having him fetch balls to wear out a dog before leaving him alone in the house.

    Deterrents

    • Taste deterrents are available at most pet stores. These deterrents can be sprayed on an object, leaving an unpleasant taste that is meant to prevent chewing.
