Instructions
Catch a dog in the act of chasing a bird to teach her this is not the behavior you want from her. Dogs can only learn when you praise good behavior, or correct bad behavior, when they are in the act; they cannot understand that a punishment or reward is for something they did previously. You must commit to staying with the dog at all times she is outside in order to immediately correct and stop her from chasing birds.
Issue a stern "No!" to your dog as soon as he begins to chase a bird. Command him to return to your side.
Blow a whistle if your dog doesn't respond readily to your voice commands. Some dogs will respond better to a whistle or a small clicker device sold specifically for dog training.
Deliver a small jolt from an electric shock collar if your dog doesn't respond to voice commands, whistles or clickers. Some think training collars are inhumane, but advocates say the collars are effective and the small amount of electricity delivered is just enough to stop a dog from an undesirable behavior.
How to Stop Dogs From Catching Birds
Dogs are natural predators, so don't be surprised if your dog, even if he is a small breed, chases birds. Sometimes, he may even catch one and possibly kill it. Even though hunting is a basic instinct for dogs, many pet owners are disturbed when their dogs chase birds. Many dogs, however, can be trained to leave birds and other small wildlife alone.
