Parts for Invisible Dog Fences

You may have heard about people using an invisible dog fence to keep their dogs within the boundaries of their yard. You also may have wondered how it works. In order to understand how it works, you need to know what parts come with an underground fence and how they work together to keep the dog in the yard.
  1. Boundary Wire

    • The boundary wire or invisible underground wire is buried about 2-4 inches underground. The wire is hooked up to the transmitter, which works with the receiver collar to keep the dog within the boundaries that you, the owner, have set up. The wire is very thin and care must be used when burying it in the ground so it does not break. .

    Receiver

    • The receiver is a collar with a probe on the inside that rest against the dog's skin. The collar takes a 9-volt battery to operate. The transmitter sends a signal to the collar if the dog starts getting close to the boundary wire. At first, the collar will beep and if the dog continues to move towards the boundary, the collar will give the dog a shock as a warning.

    Training Flags

    • The white training flags are placed around the boundary of the yard where the boundary wire has been buried. The flags will be a reminder to the dog that the area that he is entering is off limits. However, the dog must be trained by the owner to know what these flags mean.

    Transmitter

    • The transmitter is positioned in the home or garage in a place that is unrestricted. The transmitter is plugged into an outlet after the boundary wire is connected. As long as the boundary wire is intact, a green light on the transmitter will blink on and off.

    Test Light

    • The test light is used to make sure that the receiver is working. You place the test light on the receiver contact points and move it up to the transmitter. If the receiver is working, the test light will start glowing.
