When a dog urinates on carpets or furniture it can leave a very unpleasant odor. Part of the problem with lingering odor is that it stimulates your dog to urinate in the region again so that the problem persists. After you remove the smell permanently your dog will no longer return to urinate in the same place. Note that you should avoid using ammonia-based products to clean dog urine. One of the ingredients of dog urine is ammonia and your dog may well be encouraged by it to re-offend in the same area.

Vinegar Solution
-
If your dog has recently urinated on the carpet, immediately clean up as much of it as possible with paper towels or old rags. After this, wet the area with a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water. Let the solution soak deeply into the fibers. Leave it to almost completely dry; then clean it up with paper towels or rags. You can use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to remove excess moisture. Cover the area with several layers of paper towels or rags weighed down with a heavy object. Leave them there until the carpet is dry. Finally, sprinkle baking soda over the affected area.
Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
-
Another method of removing dog urine stains is to sprinkle them with baking soda and follow that up by applying a mixture of 3/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tsp. of liquid detergent. Work this into the fabric with a brush or fingers (but be sure to wear gloves). Let it dry and vacuum it up. This mixture could discolor the fabric you are cleaning, so be careful and test a small area first.
Borax
-
Another way to remove dog urine stains is to dampen the stain with water and sprinkle the area with Borax powder. Rub it into the stain with a brush or gloved fingers and allow it to dry. When it is dry, vacuum up the Borax powder with a vacuum cleaner.
