Purchasing a puppy provides a family with years worth of companionship. Nearly all puppies have behavior issues such as nipping, chewing furniture or personal items, or housebreaking. Sending your puppy to boot camp can both prevent and modify these typical puppy behaviors. In order to send your new puppy to boot camp, there are a few simple steps that will make the process easier for both you and your pet.
Things You'll Need
- Dog Training Treats
Instructions
Research puppy boot camps in your area. Ask your veterinarian and friends with dogs for recommendations of animal trainers offering puppy behavior classes. There are many options, including boot camps where you drop off the dog for days to a week and then pick him up at the end of training. On the other hand, some puppy boot camps allow you to attend the training sessions with your dog. Decide which is best for you both, and call local trainers for rates and availability.
Observe your puppy and prepare a specific list of behaviors you want the trainer to work on with your dog. Examples include basic obedience, house training, or nipping. Trainers may vary, so talk to the trainer beforehand to be sure the behaviors you are concerned about will be addressed.
Prepare your puppy for boot camp training by working on basic commands at home such as sit, stay, and down. Audibly say the command you wish your puppy to do, and gently help the dog complete the command. Provide positive reinforcement by giving your new puppy treats when he obeys you.
Drop off your puppy at your chosen boot camp in a positive manner. Give the dog treats as you leave to help with separation anxiety that may occur.
Continue to work with your puppy after he arrives home from boot camp. Even if you were present during the training sessions, it is important to maintain this consistency so that your new puppy does not forget the things it learned at boot camp.
