Male dogs will attempt to mount female dogs to procreate, but mounting also is a natural way for dogs to establish dominance over other animals. Some dogs will immediately mount a stranger's leg when they walk into your home. If your dog is mounting dogs or people, there are steps you can take to eliminate the behavior.
Things You'll Need
- Dog toys
- Treats
- Dog crate
Instructions
Neuter your male puppy when he is 6 months old. Neutering male dogs will reduce hormone-driven mounting behavior.
Establish yourself as the ̶0;alpha̶1; pack leader to your dog through obedience training. Asserting dominance over your pet at a young age will ensure it will obey your commands to stop inappropriate behavior.
If your dog is mounting a person or another dog, divert his attention with a toy or a treat. Do not grab a dog when it is attempting to mount another dog. Mounting behavior in dogs can be a sign of insecurity. Physically intervening could threaten the animal and instigate a fight.
Exercise your dog regularly. Dogs that are walked or played with regularly are less likely to exhibit mounting behavior.
Correct the behavior on the spot. If the dog looks like it is getting ready to mount another dog or a person, quickly command it to stay off. Loudly clap your hands and in a firm voice command the dog by saying ̶0;off.̶1;
If your dog is attempting to mount guests or children, put him in his dog crate for a ̶0;time out.̶1;
