A whistle is a useful tool when training your dog. Think about how impressed your friends will be when your dog obeys basic commands. A well-trained dog makes a wonderful companion.
You don't have to spend money buying a whistle. You can find a branch in your own backyard and make your own.
Things You'll Need
- Tree branch
- Drill
- Sandpaper
Instructions
Find a branch approximately 5 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Remove leaves and twigs. Be sure it is nonpoisonous wood.
Hold the branch horizontally. Bore a hole into one end using a drill with a small bit. The hole should be bored approximately 2 inches into the center of the wood.
Hold the branch horizontally and make two cuts on top of the branch to form a notch that cuts all the way into the bored cavity. Make one perpendicular cut and the second at a 45-degree angle. Position the notch about an inch down the stem's length.
Measure the length and diameter of the drilled mouthpiece opening. Find another branch of the same tree species and cut a plug of wood according to those measurements. Fit the plug into the opening. With sand paper, sand off wood to make one flat surface (a rough surface will affect the "pitch"). The flat surface should face towards the previously-cut notch. Your whistle is ready to use.
