Dogs often explore the world around them with their mouths, which can lead to frustration when you return home to find your favorite rug chewed to bits. Chewing is a common problem for dog owners, especially those who have brought a new puppy into the house. While there is no one-shot cure for a chewing problem, you can slowly eradicate the behavior with positive reinforcement.
Instructions
Exercise your dog every day. You should play with your dog or at least walk him at least once a day. Many dog problems such as chewing, excessive barking and digging can be resolved by simply providing your dog with a better way to spend that energy.
Provide your dog with appropriate chew toys. Avoid giving your dog an old shoe or sock and invest in toys made of hard rubber or rope.
Correct your dog when you see the bad behavior by saying "No" and replace whatever he is chewing on with the chew toy. Once he is chewing on the right thing, reward him by petting him or giving him a small treat.
Continue to reward the dog for chewing on the right thing. As time goes on, he will eventually learn to chew on his toys instead of the rug.
