Dog Training with Shock Collars

There is a great deal of controversy about whether people should use shock collars as a training tool on their dog. Some believe that the collars are cruel, while others see them as an effective teaching tool.

  1. Using a Shock Collar

    • Some shock collars automatically shock dogs when they bark, or cross an electric fence. Others have a hand-held device that the owner uses to shock the dog when it does something it should not do.

    Benefits of Shock Collars

    • The dog learns what behaviors are unacceptable and stops doing them. The shock is a form of operant conditioning.

    Other Training Tools

    • Doggie's Paradise has various tips and tricks for teaching dogs how to stop certain behaviors, like keeping your pet from chewing on the furniture by cleaning the fabric with vinegar. Another tip is to fill an aluminum can with pebbles and shake it when your dog is misbehaving, the sound usually frightens dogs and causes them to stop their bad behavior.

    Down Sides to Shock Collars

    • Shock collars can cause dogs to exhibit negative behaviors associated with fear and pain. Many lower their ears and some yip in pain.

    Recommendations

    • The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends using positive training methods, at least during initial training for behavior problems. The Triple Crown Dog Academy in Hutto, Texas recommends using shock collars in stimulation mode with positive reinforcement tactics to correct all behavioral issues.
