Fear can cause even the calmest dog to become aggressive when frightened. Some dogs become fearful due to lack of socialization and interaction with other dogs, or due to traumatic experiences with an unskilled owner. When a frightened dog is startled or cornered, he may growl or bite, which can be extremely dangerous to other animals or people in the area. Working with a defensive aggressive dog can take time and patience, but having a calm, loyal companion is well worth the effort.

Instructions
Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to rule out any physical problems or injuries. Many dogs will growl or bite when they are in pain, so eliminating pain as a cause for biting will make working with your dog much easier. Ask your veterinarian to prescribe your dog a tranquilizer if he is extremely upset by new situations.
Attach your dog̵7;s collar and lead and make sure he wears them at all time while you are working with him. Fear biters will often bite when they are worried or stressed, and keeping the dog close to you not only makes him easy to control but gives him comfort as he is close to you.
Muzzle your dog to prevent him from biting as you work with him. Slip the muzzle over his nose, buckling it behind his head to hold it secure. Adjust the straps so that it fits tight against the dog̵7;s nose to keep him from pulling it off.
Expose your dog to a number of new people and places. Take him on trips with you to the store, the mall or pet-friendly stores to allow him to meet unfamiliar people and dogs. Sit him close by your side in his muzzle and collar, talking gently to him and letting him know he is OK when new people come by. He may duck or flinch to get away from them, but pet him and offer him a favorite treat to make new people a positive experience.
Give your dog a small doze of tranquilizer if he becomes extremely upset. The tranquilizer will subdue his anxiety and allow him to adjust to new situations without becoming too frightened and overwhelmed.
