How to Train a Beagle to Fetch a Toy

Not every dog is going to simply walk into your backyard or the dog park and automatically know how to play fetch. Your beagle might need to be taught how to play this game. Fetch is a wonderful way to not only bond with your pet, but also give him the exercise necessary to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Beagles have a lot of energy and will keep you playing fetch for several hours on your next trip outdoors.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 dog toys
  • Leash
  • Dog treats

Instructions

    • 1

Take your dog by a leash outdoors to an area that is open enough to accommodate the game.

    • 2

Hold two identical toys in your hand.

    • 3

Throw one of the toys and say "fetch."

    • 4

Take the leash off the dog and watch as the dog runs for the toy.

    • 5

Pull out the second toy and the dog should run back to take this toy from your hand.

    • 6

Place your dog back on the leash and throw the second toy in the opposite direction of the first while you again say "fetch."

    • 7

Retrieve the first toy as the dog is running for the second. Show her this first toy and she will once again come for it.

    • 8

Repeat this process until the dog eventually retrieves the thrown toy instead of the one in your hand.

    • 9

Give your dog a treat and praise once he catches on to the "fetch" order.
