How to House Break a Yorkshire Terrier Puppy

The Yorkshire Terrier puppy is highly intelligent and fairly easy to train. Housebreaking can prove a challenge because the Yorkie tends to not like going outside in the rain, wind or snow. When the puppy is allowed to run loose in the house it is often easy to miss the puppy urinating. Most Yorkie puppies only dribble a few drops when urinating and this can prove virtually undetectable on carpets. Persistence and avid monitoring are required to successfully housebreak a Yorkshire Terrier puppy.

Things You'll Need

  • Crate
  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Treats
  • Pet odor eliminating cleaning product

Instructions

    • 1

Take the puppy out every hour on the first day you bring it home. Remember to always attach a leash to the Yorkie and stand outside with the puppy as you wait for it to eliminate. It is imperative that you see the dog urinate or defecate so you can immediately offer praise and a treat for a job well done.

    • 2

Take the Yorkshire Terrier puppy out after every meal. Most puppies will have to eliminate following a large bowl of food or after drinking an amount of water. The puppy should be taken out within 15 minutes of completely a meal or drinking.

    • 3

Take the Yorkie out promptly after any playing sessions, exercise or any amount of excitement. Yorkshire Terrier puppies excite easily when a house guest arrives and will often have to urinate immediately so promptly take the puppy outside on a leash.

    • 4

Take the puppy out before bed and the first thing in the morning. Most puppies cannot hold their urine throughout the night so set your alarm clock to get up every couple of hours to take the puppy potty.

    • 5

Place the Yorkshire Terrier puppy into a crate at night, when you leave the house or when you cannot monitor its behavior inside of the home. Place a bed into the crate with the Yorkie and a few toys. Most dogs come to adore their crate. Remember to promptly take the Yorkie out when you release him from the crate.

Say "No" in a firm voice if you catch your puppy in the act of urinating or defecating in the house. Promptly pick up the dog and take it outside.
