How to Train Dogs That Are Afraid of Everything

Just like people, some dogs can be timid and reluctant to try new things. Fearful dogs can be a challenge for their owners, but with time and consistent training, you can help your dog overcome many fears. The key thing to remember is that going slowly will work better in the long run. According to dog expert Stan Rawlinson, ̶0;To gain and improve a dog̵7;s confidence and reduce the level of anxiety and timidity, you need to use a consistent, gentle, positive, and measured approach. If you try to speed up the process beyond the capability of the dog, then you will go backwards and your dog̵7;s newfound confidence will plummet.̶1; Though it can take time to help your dog build confidence, your efforts will be rewarded.

To build confidence in a shy dog, focus on basic obedience. Train your dog to sit, stand, lie down, heel and come. Repeat these commands several times a day and always reward your dog with praise. Make sure your dog knows you are happy with her by rewarding her with both food and lavish petting.

If your dog is afraid of an object such as a plastic bag, find out how close your dog can get to the object without showing anxiety. From whatever distance she feels safe, ask your dog to sit and praise her for obeying you.

With your dog, take one step toward the feared object, ask her to sit, and praise her. Continue this process until you can get your dog to sit beside the object. Praise her lavishly and give her several treats in a row.

If your dog shows any anxiety, back up and go slower. Take your time and show your confidence. Your emotions travel down the leash and right into the dog. If you are confident and trustworthy, she will slowly learn to be less fearful.
