Say the word "No" loudly each time the puppy starts to bite. The point is to startle the puppy enough to stop it from biting. A loud, firm voice is all that is needed; do not scream at the puppy.

    • 2

Stop playing with the puppy for 60 seconds each time it bites. It's best to stand up and walk away from the puppy and then return after 60 seconds. This teaches the puppy that if it wants to continue playing, it cannot bite.

Provide several toys for the puppy to chew on. When the puppy starts to bite, show it the toy and allow it to bite the toy instead.

    • 4

Stop playing games that encourage biting, such as tug of war. These games only reinforce that biting is acceptable. Instead, choose games like fetching a ball where it is acceptable for the dog to bite the ball.

Apply the training techniques consistently with all people the puppy attempts to bite. This will make the puppy learn much quicker that biting is bad.
