Bringing a new puppy into your home can be an exciting experience. Many people choose to crate train their puppy. Teaching a puppy to stay in his crate is helpful for keeping a home free of urine and feces during the night and keeping your puppy from destroying your home during the day. Unfortunately, many puppies do not enjoy this process and will cry, yelp and bark loudly if left alone in their crate, especially in the beginning of the training. There are ways to cure your puppy of this tendency, both at night and during the day.
Things You'll Need
- Crate
- Blanket
- Towel
- Small clock that ticks
- Heartbeat teddy bear
- Television
- Radio
- Recently worn T-shirt
- Treats
Instructions
Night
Place the crate in your bedroom. This will give your puppy comfort if he is able to see you directly.
Place a ticking clock or teddy bear that mimics a heartbeat inside the crate. This is especially useful for a new puppy because these noises remind him of being in the litter with other puppies or with his mother.
Cover the clock or heartbeat apparatus with a cozy blanket or a towel.
Daytime
Turn on the television or a radio when your puppy is in the crate. Noise will help make your dog feel that you are home.
Place a shirt that you have recently worn in with the puppy. Your smell will comfort him.
Place a special toy or treats into the crate. The puppy will begin to associate being left alone in the crate with having this special reward.
General Training
Place your puppy into the crate as if you were going to bed or leaving for the day.
Leave the room, wait a few moments and return to the puppy.
Clap your hands loudly and tell the puppy ̶0;No̶1; in a deep, calm voice if he or she is barking or whining.
Repeat this process another time and if your puppy remains quiet, give him a treat.
