How to Train a Poodle Puppy to Roll Over

If you have a poodle puppy, you are blessed enough to have one of the most trainable dog breeds out there. Your poodle puppy will thrive on dog training and will be eager to learn new tricks. Teaching your puppy to obey basic commands has the same effect as teaching your child basic manners--a well trained dog is welcomed just about anywhere. Nearly every well trained dog knows the roll over command.

Things You'll Need

  • Puppy treats

Instructions

    • 1

Have your poodle puppy lie down on his side. (If he doesn't already know this command, you may have to put him there.) Gently rub his stomach and legs. Wait until he is comfortable lying that way and doesn't keep getting up before you proceed. This may take a while because most dogs aren't comfortable with having their stomach and legs handled. Say "Roll Over" and gently move your dog to his other side. Give him lots of praise and a treat.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 several times for about five minutes each time. (You might try one or two five-minute sessions a day.) After a few days, you should not have to move your poodle puppy to his other side. He will begin doing it himself.

    • 3

Stop giving a treat after every correct pass. Change so that only every other roll over gets a treat, and then gradually give treats less frequently until your poodle puppy will roll over with only the command.

Continue practicing this dog training command in different rooms, as well as outdoors, until your poodle puppy is an expert.
