There are many features of dogs that people find charming. Their friendliness, intelligence and loyalty to the pack are all things that humans also value. A dog's love of dirt, however, is something that human owners and their canine pets will never see eye to eye on. If you want to stop your dog from tracking in mud and other debris, you're going to have to put in the time and effort to train your pet and to help him get clean.
Things You'll Need
- Mat
- Towel
- Dog treat
Instructions
Place a mat big enough for the dog by every door you are going to be taking the dog through. Put the mat either indoors or outdoors.
Leave a large towel that you don't mind getting dirty somewhere near the door. You can put it in the closet or hang it on a hook outside the house.
Keep your dog out of muddy areas such as gardens and wet fields when he is outside. You'll never be able to prevent him from tracking in mud if he gets covered in it.
Train your dog to sit. Hold his favorite treat right above his head and place your hand on his hips. Move the treat backward while pushing down gently but firmly and saying the word "sit." When he sits down, pet him, give him the treat, and praise him.
Practice the sitting command at least twice a day and five or more times each session. If you have a very patient dog, continue to train him until he gets bored. When your dog sits every time whether or not you give him a treat, his training is complete.
Train your dog to stay. Have him sit, and then say "stay" while slowly backing up. If he stands up, push down on his hips and say "stay." If he remains sitting, give him a treat and praise. Keep practicing until he stays sitting when commanded.
