Things You'll Need
- Small squeaky toy
- Training treats
Instructions
Sit in a hallway, facing one end of the hallway. Make sure you are blocking the whole entrance.
Place your dachshund puppy in front of you in the hallway. Play with him using the squeaky toy to get him excited and so all of his attention is solely on your interaction.
Toss the toy to the end of the hallway. Your puppy should chase after it. If he does not, retrieve it yourself and repeat the first three steps until he does.
Gently coax your puppy to return to you with the toy. You may need to coax him several times before he complies.
Reward your puppy with a training treat when he successfully returns the toy to you. Gently praise him for fetching the toy, so he knows retrieving the toy was the correct behavior.
Repeat steps 1 to 5 until your dachshund fetches the toy every time you throw it. Gradually stop giving training treats as a reward.
