How to Train With Pinch Collars

Pinch collars, also referred to as prong collars, are a type of training device used while a dog is on a leash. Pinch collars are not permitted during many dog shows or dog sporting competitions because of the controversy surrounding their use. Pinch collars look like they would hurt the dog, but in actuality, pinch collars can be safe and effective when properly used. If you plan to use a pinch collar, learn to use one properly for training, so that you do not misuse the collar and cause injury or pain to your dog.

Things You'll Need

  • Pinch (prong) collar
  • Regular collar
  • Thin leather or nylon leash

Instructions

  1. Operating The Collar

    • 1

Grab the swivel attachment where the leash connects to the pinch collar, and allow the collar to hang loosely.

    • 2

Pinch the link that is at the center where the collar hangs down until it opens. The link is exactly opposite from the swivel attachment you are holding.

    • 3

Wrap the collar around your dog's neck, and pinch the open link back into place. Attach the leash to the swivel, and position it at the back of the dog's neck just behind the ears. If the collar will not sit in this position, remove a few links and pinch it back together.

    • 4

Place a second collar around your dog's neck for safety. Pinch collars are made up of links, and it is possible for the links to separate. Use the second collar as a backup so that your dog does not escape.

    Training with Your Pinch Collar

    • 5

Walk your dog as usual by the leash. Provide your dog with gentle guidance pulls on the leash. The pinch collar will effectively send your commands to your dog by applying pressure around the neck, similar to a horse's bit.

    • 6

Correct your dog with sharp "pops" or yanks on the leash if it is doing something it should not be doing, such as barking or lunging at strangers. Do not pull with all of your strength. Instead, pull back until your dog responds.

    • 7

Teach your dog to sit with a prong collar by pulling up and back on the leash. The message will be sent to your dog to stop moving as you pull up on the leash and to sit when you pull back.
