How Do I House Train My Siberian Husky Puppy?

Siberian huskies are medium sized working dogs that can be difficult to train because they are highly intelligent and often stubborn. House training your Siberian husky puppy can take several weeks, but with ample effort you will have a dog that no longer has accidents in your home.

  1. Dog Crate

    • Purchase a dog crate or small cage. These dog crates vary in sizes and price. A puppy should be kept in a smaller crate and should only have enough room to stand up and turn around. This crate will be where the puppy stays at night because a dog will generally not void where it sleeps. Remember that a puppy has a small bladder and should be left in this crate for no longer than two hours at a time between trips outside.

    Feedings and Exercise

    • Keep your dog on a strict feeding, exercise and potty schedule. Your puppy will quickly catch on to this routine and will eventually anticipate when it will be taken outside. You will also have a better indication of when your puppy will need to urinate or defecate if the feeding schedule is strictly adhered to. Always remember to try and take your puppy outside to void right after it eats, sleeps or has an active bout of play. When the puppy does void outside, give him or her a lot of verbal praise and a treat.

    Correcting Accidents

    • When the puppy is not in the crate, keep him close to you at all times. This means having him leashed and kept in the same room as you. Put up baby gates to make sure the puppy does not stray from the room you are in. It is important that the puppy is corrected just after he or she has an accident inside the home. This will ensure that the puppy is aware of why he or she is being scolded. A minute or two of hesitation can cause the puppy to become confused about why she is being corrected. When you scold your puppy for voiding in the home, never yell or physically abuse the puppy. Instead, use a high pitched voice and tell the puppy that it is time to use the potty (or some other key word) and take the puppy outside and place it on the yard. This will make your Siberian husky puppy begin to associate voiding with the yard.

    Clean Up Accidents

    • It is important to quickly clean up any accidents the puppy has in the home. Your Siberian husky will begin to associate urine smells with acceptable behavior, which will reinforce unwanted indoor accidents. Clean up the urine by blotting at the stain with plain vinegar.
