Crate Training Vs. Paper Training

House training your dog isn't always an easy task. Because it's vital to teach your dog acceptable behavior, it's important to determine early if crate training or paper training will work best for your dog.

  1. Advantages of Crate Training

    • The crate becomes a place of comfort for the dog, almost like a den. The Humane Society of the United States notes, "The primary use for a crate is house training. Dogs don't like to soil their dens."

    Disadvantages of Crate Training

    • Crate training does not teach your dog how to act in all rooms of the house. It separates you from your dog while you are in the house.

    Advantages of Paper Training

    • Some dogs don't do well in crates and may whine or bark. This could disturb neighbors or cause the dog stress. Paper training may work better if you have mobility problems or live in a high-rise apartment. Paper training is recommended if you can't make it outside quickly.

    Disadvantages of Paper Training

    • During training, your dog will learn that eliminating in the house is acceptable.
