You̵7;ve planted a new tree in your yard to add that perfect touch. While you might want to stand back and admire it, your dog could have other plans ̵1; digging at the tree. What may seem cute at first could lead to behavior that ultimately kills the tree. To protect your hard work and your tree, try a few techniques.
Things You'll Need
- Fencing
- Hot sauce
- Bitter apple spray
- Feces
- Designated digging area
Instructions
Place protective fencing around the tree. Use mesh wire or other sturdy material to create the fencing. Be sure to place the fencing at least a foot under the ground to keep your pooch from digging underneath the fence.
Spray a diluted hot sauce mixture around the tree. In a squirt bottle, combine equal parts water and hot sauce and place the mixture around the tree. The smell of the liquid might keep your dog away, and if he licks or touches the liquid, the heat will likely deter him from going near it again.
Place your dog̵7;s feces around the tree. While this may not look or smell very pleasant, it may keep your dog from going near it. Dogs typically do not like the scent of their feces and will stay away from it. Either place the droppings around the tree, or place a pile next to the tree.
Apply bitter apple spray to the areas around the tree. In general, most dogs do not like the way this product tastes or smells; therefore, your dog may avoid the tree.
Provide a place for your dog that is acceptable to dig. If your dog loves to dig, designating an area in your yard where he is allowed to may cause him to leave your tree alone. To attract your dog to one area, try burying toys or treats in the ground and let him find them. When he has accomplished this, be sure to praise him. Try this technique every day until he begins to dig in the area.
