Teaching your bulldog to perform tricks is a great way to teach it obedience. Plus, it's a source of fun and entertainment for both the dog and those watching it perform. One of the most well-known tricks is "roll over," in which the dog lays down and performs a full roll before standing back up. While the trick may seem a daunting task at first blush, it is simply the culmination of several simple tricks strung together.
Things You'll Need
- Bulldog
- Treats or toys
Instructions
Teach your bulldog to lie down. With the bulldog sitting, give your chosen command for "lie down," then gently pull the dog's front two legs forward, causing it to lower to the ground. Reward upon completion with toys, treats and affection until your bulldog learns to lie down.
Teach your bulldog to play dead. With your bull dog lying down, give the "play dead" command and gently roll the dog onto its back by applying pressure on one side of the dog, slightly above its body's vertical center. Reward as in Step 1 until your bulldog learns to roll over.
When the dog is playing dead, give the command for "roll over."
Gently grab the front and rear paws on the side the dog pivoted around when rolling onto its back.
Roll the dog over so that its paws are back on the ground.
Reward the bull dog upon completion of the roll, and continue to do so until your bulldog has learned to roll over.
