Directions for a Pet Stop Fence System

Install a Pet Stop Fence System indoors or out to keep your pet from venturing into areas close to off-limits items. You can install most systems in a matter of days if you have some basic DIY skills. Plan your project, and you will have your pet fence up and operating with minimal hassle.

  1. Preparation

    • Before you begin, make a sketch of the area for the installation. For exterior installations, mark on your sketch the location of the underground utility lines or pipes. Call the utility company if unsure. Indicate on your plan where you will place your wires. You can have strictly an interior or exterior installation, or a combination of the two. Gather the tools you'll need to complete the project. Decide on a waterproof location for the transmitter near an outlet.

Choose the Pet Stop Fence System that best meets your needs. Take into consideration your dog's age, temperament and size. Purchase a system that includes a receiver with multiple correction options. Avoid the one-size-fits-all receiver model that offers no flexibility for training your dog.

Pick a receiver compatible with your pet's size. For example, if you have a toy poodle, you may want to find the smallest receiver available. In contrast, a German shepherd will need a larger receiver. Never start your dog off training with the especially powerful Stubborn Dog Receiver.

Whichever product you finally choose, expect, at minimum, a one-year warranty that offers full replacement for defective hardware.

    Installation

    • Mark the underground utilities. Go over you sketch and make any necessary adjustments before you start laying the wire. Dig a trench and bury the wire 1 to 6 inches underground. Cover the wire, and use your feet to pack the dirt over and around the wire.

If you use any type of tool, such as a handheld weeder, take care not to break the wire. If you accidentally break the wire, or need to splice two wires together, do not use electrical tape on the connection. Instead, use a waterproof wire splice.

To install your wire across driveway or patio, use your circular saw outfitted with a masonry blade. Install the wire deeply at the edges to ensure that you don't cut into the wire when doing your yard work. Cover the cut with a matching material if needed.

Locate the transmitter on the interior. (Many people put the transmitting device in the garage.) Place it near an outlet; you will need to connect it to the boundary wire you install.

Program the receiver and fit your pet. Initially program the Pet Stop Fence System receiver at the lowest possible level to begin training your pet. As you proceed with training your pet, keep in mind that different breeds have distinct personalities; therefore, pets will interact with the system in their own way.

Some pets will easily understand and accept the system with minimal training. More rigid pets may require multiple sessions before they adapt to the Pet Stop Fence System.
