Rottweilers are a large breed of dog that with the proper socialization, training and attention, can make a human companion. For some, potty training an adult Rottweiler may be easier than a puppy because of the limited attention span a puppy has. With repetition, persistence and positive reinforcement, you can potty train your Rottweiler. Make sure you have the time to dedicate to a puppy before deciding to get one, as potty training will require a lot of attention and time.
Instructions
Take the dog outside frequently. If you see your dog getting ready to eliminate, or he has started to eliminate, pick him up and take him outside immediately. Stay outside with him until he finishes eliminating or eliminates again. Give the dog loads of praise when he eliminates outside. Repetition with taking the dog outside will teach him that he should eliminate outside, not in the house. The praise will reinforce the good behavior of eliminating outside.
Stick to a schedule. Rottweilers mature slowly, remaining a puppy for up to two years. This means training could take up to 12 months. Sticking to a strict schedule will help keep your puppy or adult's body on a time table. Take your dog out immediately after he wakes up in the morning or from a nap. Also take the dog outside 30 minutes after every meal. When you take the dog outside you will have to wait for him to eliminate, then praise him. Praise tells the dog he is exhibiting an accepted behavior.
Establish a hierarchy. Rottweilers are hard headed and the leaders of their packs. You have to show your dog that you are dominant by reinforcing the potty training procedure. Once the dog learns that you are the leader of the pack, he will be submissive to you. This will help you potty train your dog by letting him know that he cannot eliminate in the house if you do not let him.
