Things You'll Need
- Frisbee
- Labrador puppy
- Doggie treats
Instructions
Start by purchasing the correct Frisbee for you dog. Purchase a Frisbee that's not too big for the puppy to grasp in it's mouth, depending on the size of your puppy this might be anywhere from 6 inches to 12 inches in diameter. Old Frisbees with gouges or plastic shredding should be avoided, since they could hurt your puppy.
Take your puppy out into an old field, to a park, or to a dog run and start playing Frisbee. Practice your throw, as a good throw is the best way to get a puppy interested in the toy. Be enthusiastic, and be encouraging. A puppy will play the best with an owner who's interested in playing.
When your Labrador catches the Frisbee, reward the puppy with a treat. Encourage the puppy with incentives and you'll be well on your way to training the puppy to hold a Frisbee. Once they can hold, it's important to teach them to drop. It's not productive to constantly be wrestling the Frisbee from your dog's mouth. Train the dog with a firm 'Drop!' command, the best way to do this is to point to the ground and have another object in your hand that the dog wants. Such as another Frisbee or a treat.
Up the ante with the Frisbee. Try holding the Frisbee at arm's level and entice your puppy to jump up and grab the Frisbee. When your Labrador grabs the Frisbee from your grasp, it let them have it as a reward. Reward your pet with praise and affection when they successfully grab the Frisbee.
