While trying to paper train your Yorkie puppy may seem daunting, it is actually quite easy. Paper training is far easier than housebreaking, and is perfect for owners living in apartments. With a little bit of time and patience, you can successfully train your Yorkie to use paper or puppy pads.
Things You'll Need
- Puppy Pads
- Newspaper
Instructions
Choose where you want your Yorkie to go to the bathroom. Pick somewhere that isn't out in the open, such as a laundry room or bathroom.
Place the newspaper or puppy pad down in the designated area. Make sure it stays there so that your Yorkie knows exactly where to relieve herself.
Pick one keyword and stick to it. When telling your Yorkie to go to the bathroom, always use the same key term. This could be "Got potty" or "Do your business."
Instruct your Yorkie using the key term to go to the bathroom on the paper. You may need to keep her confined, especially when you are not home, to this area when first beginning training.
Reward your Yorkie when she goes to the bathroom on the paper. Give her a training treat and verbally praise her. This tells her that the behavior is good and to continue doing it.
Punish your Yorkie using voice when you catch her in the act of relieving herself somewhere other than the pad. Simply say "Bad Dog" or "No." Do not physically punish her, and do not yell unless you catch her in the act.
Avoid rubbing your Yorkie's face in her accidents. While some dog owners think this is an effective way to house break a young puppy, it can actually cause more accidents to occur.
