Building muscle on a pit bull is similar to the way humans build muscle. The most important factors are diet and exercise. Be sure that your pit bull is not too young. Exercising a pit bull that is still developing can be harmful if done too soon and not properly--just as it would be for a human child to start weight training. Foods rich in protein are good to feed your dog because protein helps build muscle. Correct exercising techniques and good healthy food choices will help your pit bull build muscle and strength.
Things You'll Need
- Spring pole
- Weight pull harness
- Protein-rich foods
Instructions
Give your pit bull a high quality diet, foods rich in natural, quality ingredients and amino acids. Look for dog foods with meat as the primary ingredient. Foods with less bone meal and ash are recommended. Lean proteins found in chicken, beef and eggs are good sources.
Start off by walking your pit bull 3 to 5 miles a day. This can easily start to build stamina for more intense work down the road.
Use what is called the spring pole. A spring pole usually consists of a rope, hide and inner tubing or tire. It builds muscle quickly because of its give-and-take action. It motivates your dog to keep going, and this really brings out muscle mass in your pit bull.
Try a weight pull harness. This generally is not used until the pit bull reaches 18 to 24 months. Have your dog drag 3 to 5 Ibs. for a short distance while walking. Make sure the distance is small until he is are able to go longer.
Increase the weight once this has become too easy for your pit bull. Add 1 or 2 lbs. If you had your dog increase the distance it pulls the harness, remember to go back to short distances until he is able to go longer.
