DIY Electric Fence for Dogs

Installing your own electric dog fence can be done in a few hours. You will want to complete the project on a sunny, warm day, and you will need to do some digging, so the ground should be soft.
You can purchase electric dog fence kits from pet stores or home improvement stores for $100 to $200. The standard electric dog fence kit will come with a water-resistant dog collar, transmitter, boundary flags, batteries, installation wire and training manual. Most kits come with 500 feet of wire to cover approximately 1/2 acre. You may purchase additional wire if deemed necessary.
The two types of installation are "above ground" or "in-ground." The "above ground" electric fences are installed with ground staples. The wiring is pushed through the ground, embedded just below the surface to prevent tripping over the wires. The "in-ground" installation calls for digging the wires into the ground, approximately 1 foot deep, and using boundary flags to indicate where the wires are installed.
