How to Stop My Dog From Sleeping on My Couch

Dogs are often referred to as man's best friend. Unfortunately, that friendship can become strained when the dog is engaging in behavior you do not approve of. If your dog is jumping up on or sleeping on your couch and you would like him to stop, there are several steps you can take to teach him.

Instructions

    • 1

Reprimand your dog when you see him on the couch. When you're home, remind him frequently that this behavior is not allowed. For times you are not at home, close off the room entirely. After you have reprimanded your dog, praise him for going to the floor.

    • 2

Purchase a dog bed and place it near the couch. It may be that your dog simply prefers the comfort of a soft surface to the floor. Reward him every time he chooses the bed instead of the couch.

    • 3

Purchase a Scat Mat if your dog continues to get on the couch. The Scat Mat is a touch-sensitive training pad for dogs and cats and is placed on a prohibited surface. It will emit a gentle shock when your dog jumps on the couch.

Place a carpet runner upside down on the couch if your dog continues to get on it and if you would prefer to not use a Scat Mat. The spikes on the carpet runner will feel uncomfortable and may be enough to encourage your dog to stay on the floor.
