How to Stop a Dog From Going Through an Electric Fence

An electric fence is used to prevent dogs from leaving the yard. A wire fence is attached to a radio transmitter and buried along the perimeter of the yard. The wire then emits a radio frequency that causes the dog collar to emit an electrical shock when the dog crosses the boundary.

Check the pet collar. If your dog is getting through the electric fence, he may not be getting the electric shock. The batteries may need to be replaced, or the collar may not be tight enough. Some longhaired dogs may be insulated from the shock by their fur.

See if your electric fence is working correctly. Most brands show errors on the radio transmitter unit if there are breaks in the wire or other problems. Call the installation company to make sure the system is functioning properly.

Go over the training procedures with your dog. You must train your dog to understand the boundaries of the electric fence. Most systems come with a small training flags that mark the perimeter of the fence. Walk with your dog around the area. When you hear the warning beep from the collar, run away from the perimeter, inviting your dog to follow you. Give him lots of praise or a treat when obeys. Repeat the process multiple times so your dog learns the process.
