Housebreaking yellow Labradors is the first task they need to master if they live in the house. When housebreaking multiple dogs, it's easiest to keep them all on the same schedule. They may not learn to go outside all the time at the same moment, but observing each other's behavior may help the process along. Yellow Labradors puppies respond well to excitable, happy tones of voice, so utilize this during training. An enthusiastic "Good dog" and ear rub reinforces that relieving itself outside is a good behavior.
Things You'll Need
- Collar
- Dog pen or crate
- Leash or tie-out
- Treats
Instructions
Put collars on the yellow Labradors. Select strong collars.
Set up a dog pen or crate in a low-traffic area of the house. Pick a spot where the pen can stay at all times. The dogs will consider it "their" spot. Use the pen to hold the dogs when you aren't around. Not only will this prevent accidents, but it also keeps the dogs from chewing on items, a common Labrador pastime.
Take the dogs outside once they wake up in the morning. Hook them up to a tie-out or use a leash. Say "Go outside" or another phrase only used at bathroom time. Say this phrase when it's time to go outside. Once the dogs relieve themselves, praise them and give them small treats.
Take the dogs outside after they eat. Let the dogs stay outside for about 20 minutes. Take the dogs back outside within 30 minutes.
Take the dog out once every hour to two. Any time the dogs sleep, drink, play or eat, take them outside. Keep the yellow Labradors on set schedule. Consistency helps the Labradors learn faster. Congratulate a dog each time it relieves itself. Do not give it more than two treats a day. Labradors respond well to positive tones of voice.
Continue taking the dogs out every two hours until they reach about five months. Gradually increase the time between trips by 30 minute to an hour.
