How to Keep Dogs From Jumping on Glass Doors

When your dog wants to go outside, it will either look at you when standing by the door, tap on the door with its paw, bark or jump on the door. Dogs may more likely jump on glass doors when wanting to come inside. This is because the dog knows you're not outside and believes this is the only way to get your attention. If your dog is jumping onto your glass door with much force, you might worry it would break the pane.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog treats
  • Clicker toy
  • Balloons
  • Adhesive tape
  • Dog door bell
  • Dog door

Instructions

Go outside with your dog once it starts jumping on your glass door. Bring two treats and have the dog sit. Walk your dog over to the door and take its paw with your hand, placing it over the glass. Give your dog a treat after doing this motion three or four more times. This shows your dog how you want it to let you know that it wants in or out.

Using a clicker toy from a pet store, give the dog a treat and press the clicker when the dog barks to come in instead of jumping on the glass. Make sure to say, "Good job" or similar praise when pressing on the clicker to give a vocal cue to the dog that it is performing good behavior.

Tape small balloons to the window using adhesive tape. Make sure the balloons are secure and placed on the glass where the dog normally jumps. After the dog pops two or three balloons, it will understand jumping on the glass is not safe.

Purchase a dog door bell. These bells come in different styles but often come with a material that can hang from your door handle. The bells require that you train your dog to jump up and ring the bell when it wants in or out. This can take longer to train your dog, and you should use the clicker toy when rewarding your dog with a treat when it rings the bell.

Consider purchasing and installing a dog door for glass as a last resort. Models of dog doors can be locked and provide easy access for the dog to come in and out. Also, installing a dog door depends on the model of your glass door and type of glass. However, you must keep in mind that by installing a dog door, you will have solved the problem, but your dog's behavior is not completely corrected.
